Flash Fiction JUMP

Staring off the edge of the bridge he had to squint to make out the ground bellow him. Long way down. He smiled wearily at the thought. Hitting the ground meant certain death, no way around it. He tried not to think of the mess that would make.

He wondered what his wife would think when she found out. How many times had she tried to calm his relentless fears? Hundreds. She would never think the same of him. His daughter’s wide smile flashed through his mind. This is really all for her. The thought struck him like a sucker punch. Once it was over they would be free. Free from his constant obsession with fear.

His hands were sweating, loosening his grasp on the rail. This is it. Just get it over with. Jump. He closed his eyes. He felt the cold air hit his face are rake through his thinning hair. Opening his eyes fear clenched his heart. Hard ground raced toward him. He couldn’t breath. Closing his eyes once more he waited for impact.

The bungee cord caught, jerking his body up and bringing him back down again. I did it; it’s over! He smiled. He had finally conquered his fear of heights.
